More Than Just a Game: Why Sport Matters at Dunstan High School
Following the recent School Sport NZ conference and inspiring insights shared by educational leaders, we are reminded that school sport plays a role far beyond scoreboards, goalposts, and medals. In today’s fast-paced digital world, structured school sport provides critical life lessons, real-world connections, and invaluable physical and mental health benefits for our young people.
Building Connections Beyond the Screen:
In an era dominated by screens, social media algorithms, and instant digital feedback, physical sport serves as a vital antidote. It offers a unique and supportive space for genuine human connection - a place where students learn to truly see themselves, support one another, and master the art of face-to-face interaction. For many of our students, participating in school sports is one of the best opportunities outside the classroom to engage personally with peers in an active, collaborative setting.
Sport creates an environment where young people navigate wins, losses, and challenges together. Guided by teachers, parent volunteers, and coaches who see their potential, students are supported as they build resilience, leadership, and confidence.
The True Value of Getting Involved:
The positive impact of participating in sport is backed up by compelling data shared by Sport NZ:
Wellbeing Boost: Active participants report up to 66% better overall wellbeing compared to non-participants.
Impact of Coaching: Having a supportive coach alone raises positive wellbeing outcomes by 48%.
How You As Parents Can Help:
Our vision for sport at Dunstan High School is Pride, Participation and Personal Excellence. To make this vision a reality, we rely on strong partnerships with our parents and whānau. Encouraging your children to get or stay involved in sport makes a lasting impact on their sense of belonging and well-being. We also invite parents to actively support our sports program by stepping into vital volunteer roles such as coaches, team managers, or van drivers.
Summer sport offers options for everyone! Several of our summer codes focus on social participation with minimal practice commitments. They are a wonderful opportunity for students who haven’t previously participated in sport at DHS to jump in, make new friends, and enjoy staying active with low time and financial commitments.
We encourage all students to step up to the challenge and try something new this coming season! Registrations are now open on the school website at Dunstan High School Sport Registrations and close on Friday 25th September. Students are also welcome to drop by the sports office anytime to discuss their options.
Let’s work together to keep our school active, connected, and thriving!
