Outdoor Education (Erlebnispaedagogik) is a unique and highly valued part of the New Zealand school experience. It gives students the opportunity to learn outside the classroom while exploring some of the country’s most stunning natural environments.

Through a range of activities, students develop practical skills such as teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and risk management. Just as importantly, Outdoor Education helps build confidence, resilience, and independence by encouraging students to step outside their comfort zones in a supportive environment.

A key idea in Outdoor Education is “challenge by choice”, meaning students are encouraged to take on new challenges at a level that feels appropriate for them, while still pushing themselves to grow.

Students will take part in both day trips and overnight experiences, learning how to plan, prepare, and safely participate in outdoor activities. This includes understanding the environment, working effectively in groups, and taking responsibility for themselves and others.

Outdoor Education in New Zealand is not only about adventure—it is about personal growth, developing life skills, and creating lasting memories in the outdoors.

Being based in Alexandra, in the heart of Central Otago, our programme at Dunstan High School is shaped by the unique and sometimes challenging conditions of this region. Students experience a wide range of weather and environments, from hot, dry summers to cold alpine conditions. This allows them to develop strong resilience, adaptability, and practical skills, preparing them to safely and confidently operate in a variety of outdoor settings.
