On Tuesday May 5th our two Year 11 History classes headed down to Central Cinemas for a powerful screening of the Sgt Haane movie/documentary.
This was an incredible addition to our curriculum, bringing the stories of the 28th Māori Battalion to life on the big screen. A massive thank you to Karin Bowen at Central Cinemas for opening up the theatre specifically for our students!

The film follows the story of Sergeant Haane Manahi during the Battle of Takrouna in the North African campaign, 1943. Haane was recommended for the Victoria Cross (the highest military honour) by four separate commanding officers who witnessed his actions. However, in a move that remains a point of historical debate, this was downgraded to a Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM). While a massive achievement, the documentary explores the long-standing efforts by his whānau and iwi to have his extreme valour fully recognised. It was a great day of learning about mana, recognition, and the lasting impact of our soldiers' stories.
