Four of our students have achieved outstanding results representing the Counties Shotokan Karate - Alexandra Dojo at the 2025 Karate New Zealand National Championships.
The championships took place at Cowles Stadium, Christchurch on Saturday, 30 August 2025, representing the highest level of karate competition in New Zealand. Our students competed against the best athletes from across the country and achieved remarkable results:
NATIONAL MEDAL WINNER: Eli Knights - 2nd Place (Silver Medal) in Kumite Male 14/15 Years +60kg
TOP 5 NATIONAL PLACINGS: Eli Knights - 5th Place in Kata Male 14/15 Years Premier
Angel Bruce - 4th Place in Kumite Female 14/15 Years -55kg
Curtis Melton - 5th Place in Kumite Male 14/15 Years +60kg
Zach Struthers - 5th Place in Kumite Male 14/15 Years Open
These results are particularly impressive as they represent the culmination of a remarkable year for these students. Following their success at the regional championships in June they have progressed to achieve national-level recognition.
Eli Knights' silver medal performance was especially noteworthy - achieving 2nd place in New Zealand in his weight division demonstrates exceptional skill, dedication, and sportsmanship.
All four students have shown that with commitment and proper training, young people from Central Otago can compete and excel at the highest level.
These achievements reflect not only their dedication to karate training but also the discipline, focus, and determination that these students bring to all their endeavors. They have been outstanding ambassadors for both the karate club and Dunstan High School.
About the Competition: The National Championships draw competitors from across New Zealand, making these top-5 placings and medal win truly exceptional achievements. For context, Kata involves performing choreographed sequences of techniques judged on precision and power, while Kumite is controlled sparring competition emphasising technique and strategy.
