There have been remarkable achievements of several Dunstan High School students who have excelled representing our Shotokan Karate club at two recent major tournaments.

At the Karate New Zealand South Island Schools Tournament on Saturday, 31 May 2025:

• Curtis Melton won Gold in Male U/16 Kata Premier
• Elijah Knights won Gold in Male U/16 Kumite Open and Silver in Male U/16 Kata Intermediate
• Jacob Knights won Silver in Male U/19 Kata Premier
• Zachary Struthers won Bronze in Male U/16 Kumite Open
• Abigail Conradie competed in a very tough divisions and performed exceptionally well

At the Karate New Zealand Otago Southland Regional Championships on Sunday, 1 June 2025:

• Angel Bruce won Gold in Kata Female 12/13 Years Open and Bronze in Kumite Female 12/13 Years Open
• Jacob Knights won Gold in Kata Male 17 Years Open and Bronze in Kumite Male 16/17 Years Open
• Curtis Melton won Silver in Kata Male 14/15 Years Open and Bronze* in Kumite Male 14/15 Years Open
• Elijah Knights achieved Silver in Kumite Male 14/15 Years Open and 4th place in Kata Male 14/15 Years Open
• Zachary Struthers won Bronze* in Kumite Male 14/15 Years Open
• Abigail Conradie achieved 5th place in Kata Female 14/17 Years Open and Bronze in Kumite Female 14/15 Years Open

*Large divisions award 2 bronze medals based on the Repercharge system.

These outstanding results demonstrate the dedication, discipline, and excellence that these students bring to all their endeavors. They have been exceptional representatives of both our karate club and Dunstan High School.

About Kata and Kumite: For those unfamiliar with karate competition, Kata is the performance of choreographed sequences of karate techniques, judged on technical precision, power, timing, and spirit. Kumite is a sparring competition where competitors demonstrate their skills in controlled combat situations, emphasizing technique, timing, and strategy.

We are immensely proud of all these students' achievements and wanted to share this success with the Dunstan High School community.
