It has been a busy two weeks for the Sustainability Committee. Last Thursday, a small group of students spent an afternoon with Haehaeata Trust checking on the health of recently planted natives at Half Mile reserve.
Some of the students had been involved in the planting of these grasses and shrubs last August so it was encouraging to return nine months later and see that most had survived the summer and were growing well. This data will inform Haehaeata’s planning for which species are thriving best in the reserve and which spots will need replanting. You can join in the upcoming planting days on the 25th of May, 8th of June, and 29th of June. Each day runs from 1pm to about 4pm. If you are interested in coming, it would be great if you could register so the trust has a good idea of numbers.

Secondly, on Monday the Sustainability Committee held their first clothing repair workshop dubbed “Patch a Puffer.” Over the course of lunchtime we had a number of students drop by to have small rips repaired, buttons sewn back on, straps reattached, and the eponymous puffer jacket patched. There was a great atmosphere and the Committee would like extend a special thank you to Mrs. Taylor for sharing her sewing skills and helping students extend the lifetime of their clothes.

There will be plenty more activities and opportunities to get involved with in the future so students should keep an eye on the notices or come along to B1 on a Monday lunchtime to find out more.
