The Sean Dickey Young Leaders Trust, a charitable trust established to support young people who wish to attend leadership courses or events. The Trust may contribute towards the cost of transport, accommodation, and programme fees, and may also provide other support consistent with its charitable purpose.

Sean Dickey was a former student of Mount Aspiring College in Wānaka. He was known for his willingness to help others and for his natural leadership qualities. During his time at college, Sean was actively involved in drama, kapa haka, and sailing. He became leader of the school kapa haka group, captain of the school team sailing group, a 420 sailing coach, and a national sailing umpire. He also contributed to the school community by helping in the canteen and writing the software for the menu.

Outside school, Sean was also deeply committed to St John. He began as a St John cadet at the age of eight, started volunteering on the ambulance at eighteen, and began working full time as an ambulance officer from the age of twenty.

Sean had significant potential to become a leader in the wider community. Sadly, he died in a motor accident at the age of twenty-two. In his memory, and to honour the contribution he made to those around him, his friends and family have established this Trust to support other young people who demonstrate similar promise and commitment.

The purpose of the Trust is to assist young people who have shown potential as community leaders to attend courses and events that will further develop their leadership skills. Examples of suitable programmes may include Outward Bound, Spirit of Adventure, Whenua Iti Outdoors programmes, or other well-established leadership development opportunities.

The Trust may contribute towards transport, accommodation, and fees associated with attending approved leadership courses or events. It may also provide other assistance where that assistance is consistent with the Trust’s charitable purpose.

To be eligible for a grant, applicants should:

• be between 16 and 25 years of age;

• have volunteered in meaningful projects within the community;

• be residents of Otago, Canterbury, or Southland; and

• be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents.

Funding rounds are held three times each year, in March, July, and November. Application forms are available from the Trust’s website:
